I decided to replace our laminate kitchen counter top with granite 12" tile squares. The old counter was swelling from water and was in real need of replacement. Although in retrospect it seemed like a good alternative to full granite, it was not. It has too many seams to deal with and my wife has to constantly work at cleaning them. I will replace it with a new counter top, one of the new high density stain and heatproof  types.
